PEAC awards Accreditation or Non-Accreditation

01.

Pre-Accreditation

Pre-accreditation is a non-accredited affiliation with PEAC indicating that a physiotherapy education program is preparing for accreditation.

Entering the pre-accreditation process is voluntary, not mandatory, for new programs.  Pre-accreditation is a paid service where PEAC plays a mentoring role for a new program interested in mentorship as program development evolves.

Non-Accreditation

To determine the level of accreditation, six Standards are assessed, each with several criteria.

There are six accreditation standards, each composed of several criteria (e.g., Standard 1 includes six criteria [1.1 – 1.6]). Some criteria are considered Core* criteria. During an accreditation or progress review, PEAC reviews the evidence submitted by the program and assigns each criterion a level of compliance (Fully Met, Partially Met, or Not Met). In the second example below, Standard 1 would receive a score of 83% because 1/6 of the criteria in the Standard was assigned Not Met.

*2012 Standards include four Core criteria; 2020 Standards include five Core criteria

The overall level of accreditation (Accreditation – Fully Compliant, Accreditation – Partially Compliant, or Accreditation – Probationary) is then determined.

Students or prospective students of entry-to-practice physiotherapy programs should review our Fact Sheet for information about the potential impact of a program’s Accreditation – Probationary status on a graduate’s eligibility to write the national Physiotherapy Competency Exam.
